Keeping communication about the home neutral
Simple arrangements that help both owners receive the same information, reduce misunderstandings, and keep personal matters separate from the sale.
Why it matters
When one person hears news first, or hears it differently, trust can suffer quickly. Agreeing how information will flow before a sale begins removes a common source of friction.
Arrangements to consider
- Updates by email to both owners at the same time, with the same content
- Written summaries after any phone call that affects decisions
- Offers presented to everyone with authority to decide
- Lawyers copied on agreed topics, once authorized
- A single shared calendar for showings and deadlines
Keeping topics separate
Conversations about the property — price, preparation, showings, offers — can stay practical. Personal, parenting, or financial matters belong with your own advisers. A real estate professional should not pass messages between owners on unrelated subjects.
If communication becomes difficult
It is reasonable to ask for written-only communication, for updates to go through each person’s lawyer, or for each owner to have their own representation. Raise this before listing if you can; it is easier to set up than to change mid-sale.
